The Uganda Insurance Commission established by the Insurance Statute of 1996 came into effect with the major objects of ensuring effective administration, supervision, regulation and control of the business of insurance in Uganda.
Its functions are listed below:
- To establish standards for the conduct of insurance and reinsurance business.
- To licence all personal involved in or connected with insurance business including insurance and reinsurance Companies, Insurance and reinsurance Intermediaries, loss adjusters and assessors.
- To safeguard the rights of policy holders and Insurance to any insurance contract.
- To provide a bureau to which complaints may be submitted by members of the public.
- To promote a sound and efficient Insurance market in the country
- To supervise and control transactions between insurers and reinsurers.
- To ensure stick compliance with the provisions of this statute and regulations made under it and other law regulating to Insurance.
The commission with its complaints bureau has its major function of responding to insurance customers’ complaints and act as an alternative to what could sometime be tedious and expensive judicial processes: Since its inception, it has so far handled 141 complaints, the majority of which are in respect of motor third party risks. The Insurance Industry mainly comprising of Insurance Companies, Insurance Brokers, Insurance agents and loss adjusters/assessors engage mainly in life and none life businesses.
