This is a magical and stunning beautiful lake in Uganda. It’s not so famous to many visitors but shouldn’t be missed on your safari to Uganda. This lake should be on your list of things to see, to experience in your lifetime. This is a great place to relax and chill out, swim, canoeing in a dugout canoe, island hopping, boating, hiking, biking, birding, nature walks, village visits as well as the interactive cultural visits. You will also enjoy the scenery that will stay with you of its 29 Islands, the mountains as well as the Virunga volcanoes plus the climate.

You can get to say a lot about this great lake but when you visit it, all those things dissipate into thin air and what you will view is one of the most beautiful lakes in Africa. Many visitors have visited the lake and enjoyed its many islands and the fantastic scenery, land scape as well as the greenery accenting this lake.

Bunyonyi also means the place of little birds and a place of solace, rest, reflection, quietness as well as tranquility. After enjoying gorilla trekking in Bwindi forest, Lake Bunyonyi is the best place to put it all into view point, to be able to take in the beauty of the lake, relax and chill out and partake in one of the fun filled things to see and do like swimming, canoeing, nature walks, hiking, biking, market place as well as village visits.

Some of the activities to do in Lake Bunyonyi include; relaxing and chilling out; this is one of the best places in Uganda to chill and relax out. This can be done after tracking the gorillas, volcano climbing, hiking and other activities that call for some rest and relaxation and chilling out on the islands and along the shores of the lake. One of the culinary delights that is found around the lake is its crayfish that is cooked in all kinds of ways and served at all times of the day when fresh and prepared in dishes from pizza to pasta. You can get to enjoy swimming since the lake is a bilharzias free lake and there are no hippos nor crocodiles found here, it’s safe to swim and enjoy fully. It’s the deep lake and the second deepest in Africa so you should be a good swimmer. Some of the lodges like Birdnest Resort also have a choice swimming pool or the lake for their guests. You can take a swim in one of Africa’s beautiful lakes and there are also places along the lake where they have the enclosed section of the lake like a swimming pool were you can swim.

You can also enjoy canoeing or boating, there are 29 islands to adventure on this lake and you can explore the villages, forest, nature walks. Have a dugout canoe with a guide and discover the world of Uganda’s magical lake. This can be an all day event or some few hours, you can choose to row or be paddled across the lake, the accommodation options are also available. You can also choose a motorized cruise of the lake and there are opportunities for the sunset cruises and birding boat safaris. The Dugout canoeing is also popular and you can also take an overnight tour on the lake and stay on an island.

There are also nature walks and the hikes: You can hike and take nature walks both on the islands and around the lake. These walks are not so active and can be taken at your pace, guides accompany you that you do not get lost and don’t miss one of the highlights of your walk. Your hike will mostly be scenic in nature and some will lead you through small villages where you will meet Ugandans up close and personal.

You can as well enjoy mountain biking; you can ride around the lake on a mountain bike and get to enjoy the scenery , the villages, the people, hamlets, the people and get a feel for the authentic Africa in Uganda. The temperatures and the weather are nice here due to the elevation and bike ride that will be most enjoyable and the equatorial sun will not beat you down. These bike rides can be long and a few hours and you will have a guide with you or our safari vehicle will also be near to help you.

Birding is another common activity carried out here. The word Bunyonyi – means place of little birds and Lake Bunyonyi is home to over 200 species of birds – one can do a great bird – boat safari with your own birding guide from the water, on some of the various islands the surrounding shores of the lake. You can also do birding on one of the many islands of this lake. This can be enjoyed on a dugout canoe or motorized boat adventure.

Lastly are the cultural interactive village visits; these can be carried out among the Batwa people who were the original people of the forest and today struggle in their quest of survival away from their beloved forest. We can also arrange for a home stay within the villages, visiting the schools, local markets and learn how to cook in the traditional manner and tend the garden where things are grown and harvested.
