The unit of currency in Uganda is the Ugandan Shilling (Ush). Licensed Forex Bureaus can be found in all major urban areas and are abundant in Kampala. They will gladly exchange British Pounds Sterling, US Dollars, German Marks, Swiss Franks, French Francs and Kenya Shillings. Some also change Canadian Dollars, Japanese Yen, Dutch Kroner, Belgian Francs, Australian Dollars, Swedish Koroner, and Italian Lira, but these are few and far between.

It is safest to carry British Pounds Sterling or US Dollars. When changing travellers cheques a valid passport is required. Some agencies may ask for your Sales Advice Slip, but as these are your only proof-of-ownership of the cheques, you are advised not do do so, and move on to another agency that does not require the same.
It is also important to note that small denomination bills of US$1, 5, 10, and 20 are changed at a substantially reduced rate, as are torn and soiled notes. This can be as much as a 5% difference.

Kampala is well serviced with banks. Uganda has  a large network of commercial banking operated by Uganda Commercial Bank Limited (UCBL). Other larger indigenous banks are Nile Bank, Crane Bank, Gold Trust Bank International Banks include Stanbic, Barclays, Standard Chartered, and Trans Africa Bank.

Banking hours are generally 09:00 to 15:00 Monday to Friday and 09:00 to 12:00 Saturdays. Some banks open later. Forex bureaus are normally open till 17:00 and are able to do electronic transfers to and from Overseas. The Uganda Commercial Bank Limited also has a branch at the Entebbe International Airport to serve incoming and outgoing passengers.
